Owning My Music

~1 min 07 Sep 2024

In this day and age, it's hard to listen to music without relying on streaming services such as Spotify, Deezer, etc. Those services could shut down tomorrow without notice and all your music would be gone.

That's why it's important to own your music physically.

It doesn't matter if it is in vinyl form or just MP3s on a USB stick, it's just important to not rely on someone else for something you listen to regularly.

I, for example, have some of my music on cassette tapes. It's an old technology (if you can call it that, haha). Still, even though it is mostly just a hobby for me, it is a way that I own my music, because no one can shut the cassette tapes down and they are always in my possession and can be played by my trusty Walkman.

Now, I know no one except us nerds use that old technology anymore, but it's still applicable to MP3s and other forms of audio storage.

I'm currently making software that can be hosted on a server and can store MP3s, metadata, history, and can download & sync. I know some similar software exists, like for example Koel, but they all have their flaws. When I finish the software, I plan on migrating my Spotify playlists over to the software and trying it out for some time, and eventually even switching to it.

Owning your music and media in general is important. You should find ways! A ton of artists are still selling CDs. Go buy one!
