Managing My Tasks

~2 mins 14 Feb 2025

Ever since I switched to iPhone (more on that in an upcoming blog post) I've again been searching for a good to-do list app.

My relationship with to-do apps has been rocky. I've never actually settled on one app and have rather been switching between apps every few months because I could never get used to any of them, and all of them had some kind of issue.

Well, today's the day I settle on a to-do app: Todoist. I know some people may say "If you support FOSS and privacy, why give all your data to a big tech to-do app company", but well, sometimes we have to sacrifice privacy for ease of use.

Every time I've tried to self-host or use some kind of privacy-respecting to-do service I've always bumped into a wall because nothing like it existed. The closest app was Tasks.org, but again, it does not sync directly but rather uses other services to sync. It also doesn't have any desktop/web apps which makes it essentially useless outside of using it on a phone. Plus, there's no iOS app, which is essential to me now that I've switched to iPhone.

I've tried Todoist many times before but I always ended up not using it because I always said to myself "There's surely something better than this" and "meh", but now I've settled on it because I realized it has features that make it very easy to organize all my tasks.

For example, Todoist allows you to use natural language when adding tasks. When you type "wash dishes tmrw" it automatically adds the due date as tomorrow. Also, typing p1, p2, p3, etc. adds color-coded priority labels to tasks which makes them easier to differentiate based on their importance.

These may be features that other to-do apps already offer, but I haven't found an app that provides the same features while also being open-source and self-hostable, which is next on the priority list after it being practical and cross-platform.

I'm still organizing my tasks and getting used to the app, but I feel as if I am settled for now and that it feels most familiar of all "popular" to-do apps.

If you have any recommendations on what apps I could use that fit my needs, or you just want to share a similar workflow, be sure to hit the reply button below and I'll be happy to read your email!
